[PIAS] Group Acquires Australian Label and Distributor Inertia Music

Local independent record label and distributor Inertia Music have been acquired by [PIAS] Group, which will see both companies increase activities in the Australian and New Zealand indie markets

Defined as a strategic partnership, the deal will ensure that Inertia Music’s foothold on the local indie music scene will not be affected. As part of the arrangement, [PIAS] will acquire Inertia Music and the representation of artists from [PIAS] Group in Australia, which is set to come into full effect from April 1.

As a champion of local and international talent, Inertia Music was founded in 2000 as a forward thinking record label and distributor. Expanding their services to artists across sales, marketing, publicity, touring and merchandise. The company boasts both established and upcoming artists, amongst the current crop of talent include Sia, M83, Angel Olsen, Bonobo, Big Scary, Hockey Dad, Tigertown and many more.

The acquisition will not impact Inertia’s existing staff, including CEO Colin Daniels, who remains in the hot seat going forward. Co-Founders Ashley Sellers and Justin Cosby are also expected to stay on with the company, with representatives stressing that the internal structure of the company will continue to be “business as usual” for all staff and artists working with Inertia.

The deal does not include the subsidiaries of the Inertia Group, which encompasses GaGa Music, Collective Artists, Handsome Tours and Fairgrounds Festival.

“Inertia’s mission has always been to empower artists independently, a vision and passion we share with [PIAS],” expressed Ashley Sellers in a statement. “This partnership will plug Inertia Music’s existing operations into the world class services offered by [PIAS], strengthening our connection with the international stage .”

[PIAS], founded in 1982 by current CEO Kenny Gates and Michel Lambot have a significant presence as one of the world’s leading independent music companies in Europe. With continued growth in America and the purchase of classical, jazz and world music specialists Harmonia Mundi in 2015, the U.K. based company are excited to add Inertia to their growing portfolio.

Of the new partnership, Gates and Lambot expressed their delight “We are very excited to have Ashley, Justin, Colin and the whole Inertia team joining the [PIAS] network and family. [PIAS] and Inertia share the same values and vision for the industry and that is why our new partnership is such an obvious and natural fit.” The co-founders acknowledge in a statement “The attention, the focus and the natural investment we both put into the artists and labels we represent is our raison d’etre.”
